I hate being person specific
But, Mr. Dev…
Thanks that you came up with a nicer word.

‘Dismissed’, ‘Expelled’, ‘Debarred’, ‘Thrown out of job’ and ‘Terminated from services’ look OK to me.

EDIT: Funny that we still have a ‘termination notice’ or ‘termination letter’ and not a ‘firing letter’ be it anywhere around the globe; formally, legally or officially in any organizational structure. Or do we have one?

I also feel that most of the indian people may not be well acquainted with this word ‘fired’ but, it’s more popular and widely used in western countries. One more thing i would like to add from my perspective is that the words like expelled, dismissed, debarred and terminated are suitable and more commonly used in school/colleges/insitutions but, i’m not pretty much sure about their usage in professional scenarios, especially when you are working in an organization, dealing with managers, employees or workers.

I don’t think that is true. Whoever is a bit above average in his knowledge of English language, would probably know this particular meaning of ‘fired’ in India as well. In fact I bet more people would know about this usage of the word, than who know about the meanings of expelled, or debarred.

All the other words look fine to me (Yes, for academic organizations as well as professional ones), except probably ‘debarred’, which might be the best word for terminating one’s professional services (in all kinds of institutions).

Some people also use ‘Lay-off’ (an employee) for this, if we are collecting words ;)
