Babylon was the capital city of the ancient Babylonian Empire, which itself is a term referring to either of two separate empires in the Mesopotamian area in antiquity. These two empires achieved regional dominance between the 19th and 15th centuries BC, and again between the 7th and 6th centuries BC. The city, built along both banks of the Euphrates river, had steep embankments to contain the river's seasonal floods. The site of the ancient city lies just south of present-day Baghdad.

बाबिल आजकल के ईराक क्षेत्र की सुमेर के पश्चात दूसरी सभ्यता। इस की भाषा सुमेर की भाषा से भिन्न थी। इसे बेबीलोनियन सभ्यता के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। बाबिल नगर जो इसी नाम के साम्राज्य की राजधानी था, आजकल के बगदाद से ८० किलोमीटर दक्षिण में स्थित था। बेबीलोन प्राचीन मेसोपोटामिया का एक नगर था। यह बेबीलोनिया साम्राज्य का केन्द्र था। 2019 में, बाबुल को यूनेस्को की विश्व धरोहर स्थल के रूप में सूचीबद्ध किया गया था। बाबुल में वर्तमान में हजारों लोग प्राचीन शहर की दीवारों के भीतर रहते हैं और निर्माण को प्रतिबंधित करने वाले कानूनों के बावजूद समुदाय तेजी से बढ़ रहे हैं।
