However, in Scottish, Manx, South African, Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Scandinavian, Polish, Israeli, South Asian and South American jurisdictions, "advocate" indicates a lawyer of superior classification.

अधिवक्ता, अभिभाषक या वकील (ऐडवोकेट के अनेक अर्थ हैं, परंतु हिंदी में ऐसे व्यक्ति से है जिसको न्यायालय में किसी अन्य व्यक्ति की ओर से उसके हेतु या वाद का प्रतिपादन करने का अधिकार प्राप्त हो। अधिवक्ता किसी दूसरे व्यक्ति के स्थान पर दलील प्रस्तुत करता है। इसका प्रयोग मुख्यतः कानून के सन्दर्भ में होता है। प्रायः अधिकांश लोगों के पास अपनी बात को प्रभावी ढंग से कहने की क्षमता, ज्ञान, कौशल, या भाषा-शक्ति नहीं होती। अधिवक्ता की जरूरत इसी बात को रेखांकित करती है। अन्य बातों के अलावा अधिवक्ता का कानूनविद् होना चाहिये। कानूनविद् उसको कहते हैं जो कानून का विशेषज्ञ हो या जिसने कानून का व्यावसायिक अध्ययन किया हो।
