In economics and finance, arbitrage is the practice of taking advantage of a difference in prices in two or more markets; striking a combination of matching deals to capitalise on the difference, the profit being the difference between the market prices at which the unit is traded. When used by academics, an arbitrage is a transaction that involves no negative cash flow at any probabilistic or temporal state and a positive cash flow in at least one state; in simple terms, it is the possibility of a risk-free profit after transaction costs. For example, an arbitrage opportunity is present when there is the possibility to instantaneously buy something for a low price and sell it for a higher price.

किसी प्रतिभूति, वस्तु या विदेशी विनिमय को सस्ते बाजार में खरीदना और साथ ही साथ तेज बाजार में बेचना अंतरपणन (आर्बिट्रेज) कहलाता है। इसका उद्देश्य विभिन्न व्यापारिक केंद्रों में प्रचलित मूल्यों के अंतर से लाभ उठाना होता है। अंतरपणन इस कारण संभव होता है कि एक ही समय विभिन्न बाजारों में उसी प्रतिभूति, वस्तु या विदेशी चलन के विभिन्न मूल्य होते हैं; और इसका परिणाम समस्त बाजारों के मूल्यों में समानता स्थापित करना होता है। अंतरपणन के लिए यह आवश्यक है कि संदेशवहन के शीघ्र साधन विद्यमान हों और संबंधित बाजारों में तुरंत ही आदेश पालन कराने का समुचित प्रबंध हो। अंतरपणकर्ता चाहे तो प्रतिभूति, वस्तु या विदेशी चलन भेज दे और बदले में आवश्यक धनराशि मँगा ले, चाहे वह उस राशि को बाजार में जमा रहने दे जिससे भविष्य में उस बाजार में क्रय होने पर वह काम आ सके।
