A blockade is the act of actively preventing a country or region from receiving or sending out food, supplies, weapons, or communications, and sometimes people, by military force. A blockade differs from an embargo or sanction, which are legal barriers to trade rather than physical barriers. It is also distinct from a siege in that a blockade is usually directed at an entire country or region, rather than a fortress or city and the objective may not always be to conquer the area.

नाकाबन्दी का अर्थ है किसी भूभाग से आपूर्ति, युद्ध सामग्री या संचार व्यवस्था को काट देने का प्रयास। यह कार्य पूर्णतः बल द्वारा या अंशतः बल द्वारा किया जाता किया जाता है। ध्यान रहे कि नाकाबन्दी तथा इम्बार्गो (सैंक्शन) में बहुत अन्तर है क्योंकि ये व्यापार में रुकावट डालते हैम किन्तु कानूनी तरीके से, बल द्वारा नहीं। नाकाबन्दी, घेराबंदी (siege) से भी अलग है क्योंकि घेराबन्दी में घेरा गया क्षेत्र बहुत छोटा होता है । ऐतिहासिक रूप से अधिकांश नाकेबन्दियाँ समुद्र में हुईं किन्तु थल पर भी नाकेबन्दी की जाती है।
