A dominion was any of several largely self-governing countries of the British Empire. Progressing from colonies, their degrees of colonial self-governance increased unevenly over the late 19th century through the 1930s, and some vestiges of empire lasted in some areas into the late 20th century. With the evolution of the British Empire into the Commonwealth of Nations, finalised in 1949, the dominions became independent states, either as Commonwealth republics or Commonwealth realms.

ब्रिटिश साम्राज्य के अधीनस्थ जो अर्ध-स्वतन्त्र सत्ताएँ थीं उन्हें स्वायत्त उपनिवेश या डोमिनियन (Dominions) कहा जाता था। ये ब्रितानी साम्राज्य के भाग थे। सबसे पहला डोमिनियन कनाडियन कॉनफेदरेशन था जिसका निर्माण १८६७ में किया गया था। कनाडा, आस्ट्रेलिया, न्यूजीलैण्ड, न्यूफाउण्डलैण्ड, दक्षिण अफ्रीका, और आयरिश फ्री स्टेट आदि डोमिनियन हैं। १९४० के दशक में भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप भी डोमिनियन थे। १९२६ का बल्फोर घोषणा के अनुसार डोमिनियन की यह परिभाषा थी- 'ब्रितानी साम्राज्य के अधीन स्वायत्त समुदाय' । १९३१ का वेस्टमिनिस्टर विधान ने डोमिनियनों के पूर्ण विधायी स्वातंत्र्य की भी घोषणा की।
