Elitism is the belief or notion that individuals who form an elite, a select group of people with intrinsic and desirable quality such as high intellect, wealth, power, physical attractiveness, notability, special skills, experience, lineage, and other desirable traits. Elites are more perceived to be more constructive to society, and therefore deserving of influence or authority greater than that of others. The term elitism may be used to describe a situation in which power is concentrated in the hands of a limited number of people. Beliefs that are in opposition to elitism include egalitarianism, anti-intellectualism, populism, and the political theory of pluralism.

संभ्रांतवाद यह विश्वास या सोच होती है कि अपनी जाति, शिक्षा, धन-सम्पन्नता, बुद्धि, अनुभव या किसी अन्य गुण के कारण किसी संभ्रांत वर्ग की सदस्यता रखने वाले कुछ व्यक्तियों के मतों का महत्व अधिक है, या उनके करे कार्य समाज के लिए अधिक लाभदायक हैं, या वे शासन करने या निर्देश देने की विशेष क्षमता रखते हैं। ऐसी विचारधारा में आस्था रखने वाले व्यक्ति को संभ्रांतवादी कहा जाता है। संभ्रांतवाद के लिए यह विशवास आवश्यक नहीं है कि कुछ व्यक्तियों को अपनी जन्म-परिस्थितियों के कारण विशिष्टता मिलनी चाहिए, हालांकि संभ्रांतवादी व्यवस्थाओं में कभी-कभी यह भी देखा जाता है। संभ्रांतवादी विशवास के अनुसार किसी क्षेत्र में अधिक भलाई के लिए उसपर एक वर्ग का विशेष अधिकार होना चाहिए या उसका प्रशासन उनके अनुकूल होना चाहिए। संभ्रांतवाद की विरोधी विचारधारा को बहुलवाद कहा जाता है और यह समाज के सभी गुटों और व्यक्तियों को सशक्त करने में विशवास रखती है। इसके अनुसार कौन किस क्षेत्र में कितना योगदान दे सकता है इसका निर्णय उसके पहले से प्रकट गुणों और परिस्थितियों को परखकर नहीं किया जाना चाहिए।
