Excretion is a process in which metabolic waste is eliminated from an organism. In vertebrates, this is primarily carried out by the lungs, kidneys, and skin. This is in contrast with secretion, where the substance may have specific tasks after leaving the cell. Excretion is an essential process in all forms of life. For example, in placental mammals, urine is expelled through the urethra, which is part of the excretory system. In unicellular organisms, waste products are discharged directly through the surface of the cell.

उपापचयी (मेटाबोलिक) क्रियायों के फलस्वरूप बने उत्सर्जी पदार्थों को शरीर से बाहर निकालने की क्रिया को उत्सर्जन कहते हैं। सजीव कोशिकाओं के अन्दर विभिन्न प्रकार की जैव-रासायनिक क्रियाएँ होती रहती हैं। इन क्रियायों के समय कुछ बेकार एवं विषैले पदर्थ उत्पन्न होते हैं जो कोशिकाओं अथवा शरीर के लिए उपयोगी नहीं होते हैं। यदि उन्हें शरीर में इकट्ठा होने दिया जाय तो वे प्राणघातक भी हो सकते हैं। इन्हीं पदार्थों को उत्सर्जन की क्रिया में शरीर बाहर निकाल देता है। कुछ हानिकारक एवं उत्सर्जी पदार्थ कार्बन डाईऑक्साइड, अमोनिया, यूरिया, यूरिक अम्ल तथा कुछ अन्य नाइट्रोजन के यौगिक हैं। ये पदार्थ जिन विशेष अंगों द्वारा शरीर से बाहर निकाले जाते हैं उन्हें उत्सर्जन अंग कहते हैं।
