Description
Metonymy is a figure of speech in which a concept is referred to by the name of something closely associated with that thing or concept.
उपलक्षण, व्याकरणशास्त्र में ऐसे अलंकार को कहते हैं जिसमें किसी चीज़ को उसके अपने नाम से बुलाया जाने कि बजाय उस से सम्बंधित किसी लक्षण या अन्य चीज़ के नाम से बुलाया जाय। उदाहरण के लिए हिन्दी में 'रामपुर' या 'रामपुरी' का मतलब एक लम्बे प्रकार का चाक़ू को कहा जाता है, क्योंकि इस क़िस्म के छुरे अक्सर उत्तर प्रदेश के रामपुर शहर से आया करते हैं। इसी तरह कभी-कभी भारत की केन्द्रीय सरकार को समाचारों में 'दिल्ली' कह दिया जाता है क्योंकि उसका मुख्यालय उस शहर में है, मसलन 'बंगाल सरकार यह क़दम उठाना चाहती है पर दिल्ली ने इसपर आपत्ति जतलाई है'।
