Description
A mirage is a naturally-occurring optical phenomenon in which light rays bend via refraction to produce a displaced image of distant objects or the sky. The word comes to English via the French (se) mirer, from the Latin mirari, meaning "to look at, to wonder at".
मरीचिका एक प्रकार का वायुमंडलीय दृष्टिभ्रम है, जिसमें प्रेक्षक अस्तित्वहीन जलाश्य एवं दूरस्थ वस्तु के उल्टे या बड़े आकार के प्रतिबिंब तथा अन्य अनेक प्रकार के विरूपण देखता है। वस्तु और प्रेक्षक के बीच की दूरी कम होने पर प्रेक्षक का भ्रम दूर होता है, वह विरुपित प्रतिबिम्ब नहीं देख पाता। गरम दोपहरी में सड़क पर मोटर चलाते समय किसी सपाट ढालवीं भूमि की चोटी पर पहुँचने पर, दूर आगे सड़क पर, पानी का भ्रम होता है। यह मरीचिका का दूसरा सुपरिचित स्वरूप है।
