Description

Perch is a common name for freshwater fish from the genus Perca, which belongs to the family Percidae of the large order Perciformes. The name comes from Greek: πέρκη, romanized: perke, meaning the type species of this genus, the European perch.

पर्च (perch) मीठे पानी में रहने वाली एक हड्डीदार मछली है जो विश्व के बहुत स्थानों में मिलती है। इसकी तीन जातियाँ हैं। किरण-फ़िन वाली हड्डीदार मछलियों के एक कुल को इन्ही मछलियों के नाम पर 'पर्सिडाए' (Percidae) कहा जाता है। बहुत सी ऐसी भी मछलियाँ हैं जो दिखने में पर्च जैसी लगती हैं इसलिए कभी-कभी उन्हें भी 'पर्च' कह दिया जाता हैं हालांकि उनका जीववैज्ञानिक कुल अलग होता है। ऐसी मछलियों को 'पर्सिफ़ोर्म' (Perciform) कहा जाता है। इनमें भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप में मिलने वाली 'कवई' मछली भी शामिल है जो पर्सिफ़ोर्म तो है लेकिन जीववैज्ञानिक दृष्टि से पर्च नहीं है।
