Protectionism, sometimes referred to as trade protectionism, is the economic policy of restricting imports from other countries through methods such as tariffs on imported goods, import quotas, and a variety of other government regulations. Proponents argue that protectionist policies shield the producers, businesses, and workers of the import-competing sector in the country from foreign competitors. Opponents argue that protectionist policies reduce trade and adversely affect consumers in general as well as the producers and workers in export sectors, both in the country implementing protectionist policies and, in the countries, protected against.

संरक्षणवाद (Protectionism) वह आर्थिक नीति है जिसका अर्थ है विभिन्न देशों के बीच व्यापार निरोधक लगाना। व्यापार निरोधक विभिन्न प्रकार से लगाये जा सकते है जैसे :- आयातित वस्तुओं पर शुल्क लगाना, प्रतिबंधक आरक्षण और अन्य बहुत से सरकारी प्रतिबंधक नियम जिनका उद्देश्य आयात को हतोत्साहित करना और विदेशी समवायों (कंपनियों) द्वारा स्थानीय बाजारों और समवायों के अधिग्रहण को रोकना है। यह नीति अवैश्विकरण से सम्बंधित है और वैश्वीकरण और मुक्त व्यापार के बिलकुल विपरीत है, जिसमें सरकारी प्रतिबंधक बाधाओं अतिन्युन्य रखा जाता है ताकि विभिन्न देशों के बीच व्यापार सुगमता से चलता रहे। इस शब्द का उपयोग अधिकतर अर्थशास्त्र में किया जाता है जहाँ संरक्षणवाद का अर्थ ऐसी नीतियों का अपनाया जाना है जिससे उस देश के व्यापार और कर्मचारियों की विदेशी अधिग्रहण रक्षा की जा सके। इसके लिए उस देश की सरकार द्वारा दूसरे देशों के साथ किये जाने वाले व्यापार का विनियमन या प्रतिबंधन किया जाता है।
