Quicksand is a colloid consisting of fine granular material and water. It forms in saturated loose sand when the sand is suddenly agitated. When water in the sand cannot escape, it creates a liquefied soil that loses strength and cannot support weight. Quicksand can form in standing water or in upward flowing water. In the case of upward flowing water, forces oppose the force of gravity and suspend the soil particles.

चोर बालू रेत, मिट्टी या अन्य किसी महीन कण वाले पदार्थ का भारी मात्रा में जल के साथ बना मिश्रण होता है। यह अक्सर विश्व के कच्छभूमि और दलदल क्षेत्रों में कई स्थानों पर प्राकृतिक रूप से पाया जाता है। अक्सर यह देखने में साधारण कीचड़ जैसा लग सकता है लेकिन यह किसी भी प्रकार के भार को सहने में असमर्थ होता है और एक अधिक श्यानता (विस्कोसिटी) वाले द्रव के गुण दिखाता है, यानि इसपर भार डालने वाली वस्तु धीमी गति से इसमें धंसने लगती है। इसका हिन्दी नाम इसी कारणवश पड़ा है - ऐसा बालू (रेत) जो दिखने में ठोस लगे लेकिन पाँव रखने पर धोखा दे जाए।
