Reincarnation, also known as rebirth, transmigration, or metempsychosis (Greek) is the philosophical or religious concept that the non-physical essence of a living being begins a new life in a different physical form or body after biological death. In most beliefs involving reincarnation, the soul of a human being is immortal and does not disperse after the physical body has perished. Upon death, the soul merely becomes transmigrated into a newborn baby or an animal to continue its immortality. The term transmigration means the passing of a soul from one body to another after death.

पुनर्जन्म एक भारतीय सिद्धांत है जिसमें जीवात्मा के जन्म और मृत्यु के बाद पुनर्जन्म की मान्यता को स्थापित किया गया है। विश्व के सब से प्राचीन ग्रंथ ऋग्वेद से लेकर वेद, दर्शनशास्त्र, पुराण, गीता, योग आदि ग्रंथों में पूर्वजन्म की मान्यता का प्रतिपादन किया गया है। इस सिद्धांत के अनुसार शरीर का मृत्यु ही जीवन का अंत नहीं है परंतु जन्म जन्मांतर की श्रृंखला है। 84 लाख या 84 लाख प्रकार की योनियों में जीवात्मा जन्म लेता है और अपने कर्मों को भोगता है। आत्मज्ञान होने के बाद जन्म की श्रृंखला रुकती है; फिर भी आत्मा स्वयं के निर्णय, लोकसेवा, संसारी जीवों को मुक्त कराने की उदात्त भावना से भी जन्म धारण करता है। इन ग्रंथों में ईश्वर के अवतारों का भी वर्णन किया गया है। पुराण से लेकर आधुनिक समय में भी पुनर्जन्म के विविध प्रसंगों का उल्लेख मिलता है।
