In biology, a species is often defined as the largest group of organisms in which any two individuals of the appropriate sexes or mating types can produce fertile offspring, typically by sexual reproduction. It is the basic unit of classification and a taxonomic rank of an organism, as well as a unit of biodiversity. Other ways of defining species include their karyotype, DNA sequence, morphology, behaviour, or ecological niche. In addition, paleontologists use the concept of the chronospecies since fossil reproduction cannot be examined.

जाति जीवों के जीववैज्ञानिक वर्गीकरण में सबसे बुनियादी और निचली श्रेणी होती है। जीववैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोण से ऐसे जीवों के समूह को एक जाति बुलाया जाता है जो एक दुसरे के साथ सन्तान उत्पन्न करने की क्षमता रखते हो और जिनकी सन्तान स्वयं आगे सन्तान जनने की क्षमता रखती हो। उदाहरण के लिए एक भेड़िया और शेर आपस में बच्चा पैदा नहीं कर सकते इसलिए वे अलग जातियों के माने जाते हैं। एक घोड़ा और गधा आपस में बच्चा पैदा कर सकते हैं, परन्तु क्योंकि खच्चर आगे बच्चा जनने में असमर्थ होते हैं, इसलिए घोड़े और गधे भी अलग जातियों के माने जाते हैं। इसके विपरीत कुत्ते बहुत अलग आकारों में मिलते हैं किन्तु किसी भी नर कुत्ते और मादा कुत्ते के आपस में बच्चे हो सकते हैं जो स्वयं आगे सन्तान पैदा करने में सक्षम हैं। इसलिए सभी कुत्ते, चाहे वे किसी नस्ल के ही क्यों न हों, जीववैज्ञानिक दृष्टि से एक ही जाति के सदस्य समझे जाते हैं।
