A widow (female) or widower (male) is a person whose spouse has died and has usually not remarried. The state of having lost one's spouse to death is termed widowhood. An archaic term for a widow is "relict," literally "someone left over". This word can sometimes be found on older gravestones. The male form, "widower", is first attested in the 14th century, by the 19th century supplanting "widow" with reference to men.

जिस स्त्री के पति की मृत्यु हो गयी हो उसे विधवा कहते हैं। जिस पुरुष की पत्नी की मृत्यु हो गयी हो उसे विधुर कहते हैं। हमारी भारतीय संस्कृति में अनेक धर्मों का समावेश देखने को मिलता हैं | इन धर्मों में कई संस्कार देखने को मिलते हैं,जैसे जन्मोत्सव,विवाह,अन्तिम संस्कार आदि|विवाह संस्कार सभी धर्मों द्वारा माननीय पवित्र संस्कार होता हैं|इसमें एक लड़के लड़की को परिणय में बांधा जाता हैं और इस बंधन का नाम पति पत्नी दिया जाता हैं| जब पति की मृत्यु पत्नी से पहले हो जाती हैं तो पत्नी को नया नाम का रिश्ता मिलता हैं,जिसे विधवा कहते हैं |
