वर्तमान भारतीय समाज जातीय सामाजिक इकाइयों से गठित और विभक्त है। श्रमविभाजनगत आनुवंशिक Aayush समूह भारतीय ग्राम की कृषिकेंद्रित व्यवस्था की विशेषता रही है। यहाँ की सामाजिक व्यवस्था में श्रमविभाजन संबंधी विशेषीकरण जीवन के सभी अंगों में अनुस्यूत है और आर्थिक कार्यों का ताना बाना इन्हीं आनुवंशिक समूहों से बनता है। यह जातीय समूह एक ओर तो अपने आंतरिक संगठन से संचालित तथा नियमित है और दूसरी ओर उत्पादन सेवाओं के आदान प्रदान और वस्तुओं के विनिमय द्वारा परस्पर संबद्ध हैं। समान परंपरागत पेशा या पेशे, समान धार्मिक विश्वास, प्रतीक सामाजिक और धार्मिक प्रथाएँ एवं व्यवहार, खानपान के नियम, जातीय अनुशासन और सजातीय विवाह इन जातीय समूहों की आंतरिक एकता को स्थिर तथा दृढ़ करते हैं। इसके अतिरिक्त पूरे समाज की दृष्टि में प्रत्येक जाति का सोपानवत्‌ सामाजिक संगठन में एक विशिष्ट स्थान तथा मर्यादा है जो इस सर्वमान्य धार्मिक विश्वास से पुष्ट है कि प्रत्येक मनुष्य की जाति तथा जातिगत धंधे दैवी विधान से निर्दिष्ट हैं और व्यापक सृष्टि के अन्य नियमों की भाँति प्रकृत तथा अटल हैं।

A caste is a fixed social group into which an individual is born within a particular system of social stratification: a caste system. In colonial Spanish America, mixed-race castas were a category within the Hispanic sector, but the social order was otherwise fluid. Within a rigid system, individuals are expected to: marry exclusively within the same caste (endogamy), follow lifestyles often linked to a particular occupation, hold a ritual status observed within a hierarchy, and interact with others based on cultural notions of exclusion, with certain castes considered as either more pure or more polluted than others. Its paradigmatic ethnographic example is the division of India's Hindu society into rigid social groups. Its roots lie in South Asia's ancient history and it still exists. However, the economic significance of the caste system in India has been declining as a result of urbanisation and affirmative action programs. A subject of much scholarship by sociologists and anthropologists, the Hindu caste system is sometimes used as an analogical basis for the study of caste-like social divisions existing outside Hinduism and India. The term "caste" is also applied to morphological groupings in eusocial insects such as ants, bees, and termites.
