नियम NOUN

  1. विधि या निश्चय के अनुकूल प्रातिबंध । परिमिति । रोक । पाबंदी । नियंत्रण । जैसे,—तुम कोई काम नियम से नहीं करते ।
  2. दबाव । शासन ।
  3. बँधा हुआ क्रम । चला आता हुआ विधान । परंपरा । दस्तूर । जैसे,—यहाँ तक आने का उनका नित्य का नियम है । (ख) सबेरे उठने का नियम ।४. ठहराई हुई रीति । विधि । व्यवस्था । पद्बति । कायदा । कानून । जाब्ता । जैसे, ब्रह्मचर्य के नियम, व्यवहार के नियम, प्रकृति के नियम ।५. ऐसी बात का निर्धारण जिसके होने पर दूसरी बात का होना निर्भर किया गया हो । शर्त । जैसे,—दानपत्र के नियम बहुत कडे़ हैं ।
  4. किसी बात को बराबर करते रहने का संकल्प । प्रतिज्ञा । व्रत । जैसे,—आज से यह नियम कर लो झूठ न बोलेंगे । विशेष—योग के आठ अंगों में एक नियम भी है । शौच, संतोष, तपस्या, स्वाध्याय और ईश्वरप्रणिधान, इन सब क्रियाओं का पालन नियम कहलाता हैं । शौच दो प्रकार का होता है— बाह्य और आभ्यंतर । जल, मिट्टी आदि से शरीर को साफ रखना बाह्य शौच है । करुणा, मैत्री, भक्ति, आदि सात्विक वृत्तियों को धारण करना अभ्यंतर शौच है । आवश्यक से अधिक की इच्छा न करना ही संतोष है । तप से अभिप्राय है गरमी सरदी सहना, धर्मशास्त्रों में लिखे हुए 'कृच्छ चांद्रायण' आदि व्रतों का करना । सब कामों को ईश्वर के नाम पर (ईश्वरार्पण) करना ईश्वरुप्रणिधान है । याज्ञवल्क्य स्मृति में दस नियम गिनाए गए हैं—स्नान, मौन, उपवास, यज्ञ- वेदपाठ, इंद्रियानिग्रह, गुरुसेवा, शौच, अक्रोध और अप्रमाद । जैनशास्त्र में गृहस्थधर्म के अंतर्गत १२ प्रकार के नियम कहे गए हैं—प्राणातिपात विरमण, मृषावाद विरमण, अदत्तदान विरमण, मैथुन विरमण, परिग्रह विरमण, दिग्व्रत, भोगोप- भोग नियम, धनार्थ दंडनिषेध, सामयिक शिक्षाव्रत, दिशाव- काशिक शिक्षाव्रत, औषध और अतिथि संविभाग ।
  5. एक अर्थालंकार जिसमें किसी बात का एक ही स्थान पर नियम कर दिया जाय अर्थात् उसका होना एक ही स्थान पर बतलाया जाय । जैसे,—हौ तुम ही कलिकाल में गुनगाहक नरराय ।
  6. विष्णु ।
