प्लैटिनम NOUN
- चाँदी के रंग की एक प्रसिद्ध बहुमूल्य धातु जो अठारहवीं शताब्दी के मध्य में दक्षिण अमेरिका से युरोप गई थी । विशेष—यह धातु शुद्ध रूप में नहीं पाई जाती और इसमें कई धातुओं का कुछ न कुछ मेल रहता है । यह प्रायः सब धातुओं से अधिक भारी होती है और इसके पत्तर पीटे या तार खींचे जा सकते हैं । यह आग से नहीं पिघल सकती, बिजली अथवा कुछ रासायनिक क्रियाओं की सहायता से गलाई जाती है । इसमें मोरचा नहीं लगता और न इसपर तेजाबों आदि का कोई प्रभाव होता है । इसी लिये बिजली के तथा और अनेक रासायनिक कार्यों में इसका व्यवहार होता है । रूस में कुछ दिनों तक इसके सिक्के भी चलते थे । दक्षिण अमेरिका के अतिरिक्त यह युराल पर्वत तथा बोर्नियो द्बीप में भी पाई जाती है ।

यह एक रायानिक धातु तत्व है। चुंबकत्व का अनु चुंबकीय सिद्धांत निम्न में से किसे के द्वारा प्रदर्शित होता है प्लेटिनम के द्वारा और इसे श्वेत धातु(white metal) भी कहते हैं
