In mathematics and computer science, an algorithm is a finite sequence of rigorous instructions, typically used to solve a class of specific problems or to perform a computation. Algorithms are used as specifications for performing calculations and data processing. More advanced algorithms can use conditionals to divert the code execution through various routes and deduce valid inferences, achieving automation eventually. Using human characteristics as descriptors of machines in metaphorical ways was already practiced by Alan Turing with terms such as "memory", "search" and "stimulus".

ಗಣಿತಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಪರಿಕರ್ಮ. ಅರಬ್ಬೀ ಗಣಿತಜ್ಞ, ಆಲ್‍ಖ್ವಾರಿಜ್ಮೀ ಬರೆದ ಗಣಿತ ಗ್ರಂಥ ಲಿಬರ್ ಆಲ್‍ಗೊರಿಜ್ಮೀ ಎಂದು ಲ್ಯಾಟಿನ್ ಭಾಷೆಗೆ ಅನುವಾದಿತವಾಯಿತು; ಜೊತೆಯಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಈತನ ಹೆಸರು ಆಲ್ಗಾರಿಸಂ ಎಂದು ಪರಿವರ್ತಿತವಾಯಿತು ಮತ್ತು ಈ ಪದಕ್ಕೆ ಗಣನೆಯ ವಿಧಾನವೆಂಬ ಅರ್ಥ ಬಂತು. ಅದುವರೆಗೆ ತಿಳಿಯದಿದ್ದ ಶೂನ್ಯ ಅಥವಾ ಸೊನ್ನೆಗೆ ಪ್ರಾಧಾನ್ಯ ನೀಡಿದ್ದು ಈ ಗಣಿತದ ವೈಶಿಷ್ಟ್ಯ. ಓ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯನ್ನು α ದಿಂದ ಭಾಗಿಸಿದಾಗ ದೊರೆಯುವ ಭಾಗಲಬ್ದ ಕಿ ಮತ್ತು ಶೇಷ β ಆಗಿದ್ದರೆ ಓ= αಕಿ+ β ಎಂದು ಬರೆಯಬಹುದು. ಹೀಗೆ ಬರೆಯುವ ವಿಧಾನವನ್ನು ಆಲ್ಗಾರಿತಂ ಕ್ರಮ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಈ ವಿಧಾನವನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸಿ ಎರಡು ದತ್ತ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಗಳ ಮಹತ್ತಮ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಅಪವರ್ತನವನ್ನು (ಜೆ.ಸಿ.ಎಂ.) ಕಂಡು ಹಿಡಿಯಬಹುದು. ಈ ಕ್ರಮಕ್ಕೆ ಯೂಕ್ಲೀಡಿಯನ್ ಆಲ್ಗಾರಿತಂ ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರು.
