अनुकूलन किसी विशेष वातावरण में सुगमता पूर्वक जीवन व्यतीत करने एवं वंशवृद्धि के लिए जीवों के शरीर में रचनात्मक एवं क्रियात्मक स्थायी परिवर्तन उत्पन्न होने की प्रक्रिया है। यह शरीर का अंग या स्थिति नहीं बल्कि एक प्रक्रिया है अनुकूलन द्वारा होने वाले स्थायी बदलावों को इस प्रक्रिया से भिन्न स्पष्ट करने के लिए उन्हें अनुकूलन जन्य लक्षण कहा जा सकता है।
