विज्ञान की प्रगति से शिक्षाप्रणाली में भी नवीन विचारधाराओं का जन्म हुआ है। इसमें परीक्षा संबंधी परिवर्तन उल्लेखनीय है। वैज्ञानिकों की धारणा रही है कि लिखितपरीक्षा द्वारा हम परीक्षार्थी के उन गुणों को नापते हैं जिन्हें नापना हमारा ध्येय होता है। इसके अतिरिक्त इस परीक्षा में परीक्षक की निजी भावनाएँ अंग प्रदान करने में विशेष कार्य करती हैं। इन दोनों से रक्षा करने के लिए यह उचित समझा गया कि विषयनिष्ठ परीक्षा ही परीक्षार्थी के मूल्यांकन में सहायक हो सकेगी। इस विचारधारा के फलस्वरूप अमरीका में ई. एल. थार्नडाइक ने सर्वप्रथम अवाप्ति-परीक्षा के पक्ष में 1904 में एक पुस्तक लिखी। उसके पश्चात् भिन्न-भिन्न देशों के शिक्षाविदों ने भी अपने देश का प्रचार किया।
