  22. किसी वस्तु में पाई जानेवाली वह बात जिसके द्वारा वह दूसरी वस्तु से पहचानी जाय । वह भाव जो किसी वस्तु के साथ लगा हुआ हो । धर्म । सिफत । विशेष—सांख्याकार तीन गुण मानते हैं । सत्व, रज और तम; और इन्हीं की साम्यावस्था को प्रकृति कहते हैं जिससे सृष्टि का विकास होता है । सत्वगुण हलका और प्रकाश करनेवाला, रजोगुण चंचल और प्रवृत्त करनेवाला और तमोगुण भारी और रोकनेवाला माना गया है । तीनों गुणों का स्वभाव है कि वे एक दूसरे के आश्रय से रहते तथा एक दूसरे को उत्पन्न करते हैं । इससे सिद्ध होता है कि सांख्य में गुण भी एक प्रकार का द्रव्य ही है जिसके अनेक धर्म हैं और जिससे सब पदार्थ उत्पन्न होते हैं । विज्ञानभिक्षु का मत है कि जिससे आत्मा के बंधन के लिये महत्तत्व आदि रज्जु तैयार होती है उसी को सांख्यकार ने गुण कहा है । वैशेषिक गुण को द्रव्य का आश्रित मानता है और उसने उसकी परिभाषा इस प्रकार की है—जो द्रव्य में रहनेवाला हो, जिसमें कोई गुण न हो, जो संयोग विभाग का कारण न हो वह गुण है । रूप, रस, गंध, स्पर्श, परत्व, अपरत्व, गरुत्व, द्रवत्व, स्नेह और वेग ये मूर्त द्रव्यों के गुण हैं । बुद्धि, सुख, दुःख, इच्छा, द्वेष, प्रयत्न, धर्म, अधर्म, भावना और शब्द ये अमूर्त द्रव्यों के गुण हैं । संख्या, परिमाण, पृथकत्व, संयोग, और विभाग ये मूर्त और अमूर्त दोनों के गुण हैं । गुण दो प्रकार के माने गए हैं, विशेष और सामान्य । रूप, रस, गंध, स्पर्श, स्नेह, सांसिद्धिक, द्रवत्व, बुद्धि, सुख, दुःख, इच्छा, द्वेष, प्रयत्न, धर्म, अधर्म, भावना और शब्द ये विशेष गुण है, अर्थात् इतने द्रव्यों में भेद जाना जाता है । संख्या, परिमाण, पृथकत्व, संयोग, विभाग, परत्व, अपरत्व, गुरुत्व, नैमित्तिक द्रवत्व और वैग ये सामान्य गुण हैं । द्रव्य स्वयं आश्रय हो सकता है पर गुण स्वयं आश्रय नहीं हो सकता । कर्म संयोग विभाग का कारण होता है, गुण नहीं ।

गुण जीवमात्र की सद प्रवृति है जिसके कारण वह विशिष्ट बनता है। अंग्रेजी में इसके लिए 'वर्चू' (Virtue) शब्द है जिसे लैटिन भाषा के 'वर्चुअस' शब्द से बना है। मनुष्य की नैतिक उत्तमता को को ही गुण कहते हैं। गुण, उत्तमता की एक प्रवृति या लक्षण है। व्यक्तिगत गुण व्यक्ति को महान बनाने वाले लक्षण है। इसलिए इसे उत्तमता से परिभाषित किया जाता है। गुण का विपरीतार्थक 'अवगुण' है।

A virtue is a trait of excellence, including traits that may be moral, social, or intellectual. The cultivation and refinement of virtue is held to be the "good of humanity" and thus is valued as an end purpose of life or a foundational principle of being. In human practical ethics, a virtue is a disposition to choose actions that succeed in showing high moral standards: doing what is right and avoiding what is wrong in a given field of endeavour, even when doing so may be unnecessary from a utilitarian perspective. When someone takes pleasure in doing what is right, even when it is difficult or initially unpleasant, they can establish virtue as a habit. Such a person is said to be virtuous through having cultivated such a disposition. The opposite of virtue is vice, and the vicious person takes pleasure in habitual wrong-doing to their detriment.
