बटेर NOUN
- तीतर या लावा की तरह की एक छोटी चिड़िया । विशेष— इसका रंग तीतर का सा होता है पर यह उससे छोटी होती है । इसका माँस बहुत पुष्ट समझा जाता है इससे लोग इसका शिकार करते हैं । लड़ाने के लिये शौकीन लोग इसे पालते भी हैं । यह चिड़िया हिंदुस्तान से लेकर अफगाणिस्तान, फारस और अरब तक पाई जाती है । ऋतु के अनुसार यह स्थान भी बदलती बै और प्रायः झुंड में पाई जाती है । यह धूप में रहना नहीं पसदं नहीं करती, छाया ढूढ़ती है ।

बटेर या वर्तक (quail) भूमि पर रहने वाले जंगली पक्षी हैं। ये ज्यादा लम्बी दूरी तक नहीं उड़ सकते हैं और भूमि पर घोंसले बनाते हैं। इनके स्वादिष्ट माँस के कारण इनका शिकार किया जाता है। इस कारण बटेरों की संख्या में बहुत कमी आ गई है। भारत सरकार ने इसी वजह से वन्य जीवन संरक्षण कानून, 1972 के तहत बटेर के शिकार पर प्रतिबन्ध लगा दिया है।
