मछली जलीय पर्यावरण पर आश्रित जलिय जीव है तथा जलचर पर्यावरण को संतुलित रखने में इसकी बहुत महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका होती है। यह कथन अपने में पर्याप्त बल रखता है जिस पानी में मछली नहीं हो तो निश्चित ही उस पानी की जल जैविक स्थिति सामान्य नहीं है। वैज्ञानिकों द्वारा मछली को जीवन सूचक (बायोइंडीकेटर) माना गया है। विभिन्न जलस्रोतों में चाहे तीव्र अथवा मन्द गति से प्रवाहित होने वाली नदियां हो, चाहे प्राकृतिक झीलें, तालाब अथवा मानव-निर्मित बड़े या मध्यम आकार के जलाशय, सभी के पर्यावरण का यदि सूक्ष्म अध्ययन किया जाय तो निष्कर्ष निकलता है कि पानी और मछली दोनों एक दूसरे से काफी जुड़े हुए हैं। पर्यावरण को संतुलित रखने में मछली की विशेष उपयोगिता है।
