Description

माया शब्द का प्रयोग एक से अधिक अर्थों में होता है। ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि विचार में परिवर्तन के साथ शब्द का अर्थ बदलता गया। जब हम किसी चकित कर देने वाली घटना को देखते हैं, तो उसे ईश्वर की माया कह देते हैं। यहाँ माया का अर्थ शक्ति है। व्यक्ति अपनी चतुराई से वस्तु को विपरीत रूप में दिखाता है, यथार्थ के अभाव में भी उन्हें दिखा देता है। यह उसकी माया है। यहाँ का अर्थ मिथ्या ज्ञान या ऐसे ज्ञान का विषय है। मिथ्या ज्ञान दो प्रकार का है -- भ्रम और मतिभ्रम। भ्रम में ज्ञान का विषय विद्यमान है परंतु वास्तविक रूप में दिखाता नहीं, मतिभ्रम में बाहर कुछ होता ही नही, हम कल्पना को प्रत्यक्ष ज्ञान समझ लेते हैं।
