शाह ईरान, मध्य एशिया और भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप में 'राजा' के लिए प्रयोग होने वाला एक और शब्द है। यह फ़ारसी भाषा से लिया गया है, शाह का अर्थ है 'बहुत बड़ा'। अर्थात जो जनता में सबसे बड़ा हो उसे शाह (राजा) कहते है। शाह जाति के लोग ज्यादातर एशिया में निवास करते है। भारत, पाकिस्तान, अफगानिस्तान, ईरान और नेपाल में भी शाह उपनाम वाले निवासी मिल जायेंगे। भारत के उत्तरप्रदेश के मकनपुर में मदार शाह (रह) की दरगाह है। मदार शाह ने इस्लाम धर्म का प्रचार सारे भारतवर्ष में ही नहीं बल्कि पूरी दुनिया में मदार शाह ने यानी हजरत सय्यद बदीउद्दीन अहमद कुतुबुल मदार अल मारूफ मदारूल आलमीन जिंदा शाह मदार ने किया।

Shah is a royal title that was historically used by the leading figures of Iranian monarchies. It was also used by a variety of Persianate societies, such as the Ottoman Empire, the Kazakh Khanate, the Khanate of Bukhara, the Emirate of Bukhara, the Mughal Empire, the Bengal Sultanate, historical Afghan dynasties, and among Gurkhas. Rather than regarding himself as simply a king of the concurrent dynasty, each Iranian ruler regarded himself as the Shahanshah or Padishah in the sense of a continuation of the original Persian Empire.
