विवरण

Reading is the process of taking in the sense or meaning of letters, symbols, etc., especially by sight or touch.

किसी पाठ को या पुस्तक के किसी भाग को सस्वर अथवा मौनरूप से पढ़ना वाचन या पठन (Reading) कहलाता है। दूसरे शब्दों में, किसी भाषा में लिखित सामग्री को पढ़ना और समझना ही वाचन है। वाचन एक जटिल संज्ञानात्मक प्रक्रिया है जिसमें 'संकेतों' का प्रसंस्करण करते हुए उनसे 'अर्थग्रहण' किया जाता है। वस्तुतः यह 'भाषा प्रसंस्करण' का एक रूप है। इस प्रक्रिया में कोई कितना सफल है, इसका मापन ही पठनबोध कहलाता है।
