A parameter, generally, is any characteristic that can help in defining or classifying a particular system. That is, a parameter is an element of a system that is useful, or critical, when identifying the system, or when evaluating its performance, status, condition, etc.

गणित, सांख्यिकी एवं गणितीय विज्ञानों में उस राशि को प्राचल (parameter) कहते हैं जो फलनों एवं चरों को एक उभयनिष्ट (कॉमन) चर की सहायता से परस्पर जोड़ती है। प्राय: t को प्राचल के रूप में प्रयोग किया जाता है। प्राचल के प्रयोग से चरों के सम्बन्ध सरल तरीके से अभिव्यक्त् करने की सुविधा प्राप्त हो जाती है। दूसरे शब्दों में, प्राचल के प्रयोग के बिना राशियों का आपसी सम्बन्ध एक समीकरण की सहायता से बताना बहुत कठिन, असम्भव या जटिल होता है।
