In classical architecture, a pilaster is an architectural element used to give the appearance of a supporting column and to articulate an extent of wall, with only an ornamental function. It consists of a flat surface raised from the main wall surface, usually treated as though it were a column, with a capital at the top, plinth (base) at the bottom, and the various other column elements. In contrast to a pilaster, an engaged column or buttress can support the structure of a wall and roof above.

अर्ध स्तंभ परम्परागत स्थापत्य कला का एक वास्तु घटक होता है; जिसका प्रयोग दिखने में एक सहायक स्तंभ की उपस्थिति का कार्य करता था एवं ऊपरी दीवार की सीमा तय करता था। मूल रूप में इसका प्रयोग अलंकरण मात्र होता था। इसमें एक सीधी सतह दीवार की मूल सतह से उभरी या उठी हुई होती थी और एक स्तंभ का आभास देती थी जिसके ऊपर एक स्तंभ शीर्ष भी बना होता था तथा नीचे एक स्तंभ आधार भी बना होता था, साथ ही अन्य स्तंभ संबंधी घटक भी उपस्थित रहते थे। एक पिलास्टर की तुलना में एक असल स्तंभ दीवार एवं ऊपरी छत के घटकों को असल में सहारा देता था।
