Important words and phrases in Marathi (For beginners)

Marathi is a member of the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European language family. Marathi is one the 22 official languages of India. Marathi is derived from Sanskrit and Prakrit and is spoken by around 72 million people as their first language. It is a language spoken majorly in Maharashtra. The other states where Marathi is spoken are Goa, Karnataka and some parts of Madhya Pradesh. 

Learning Marathi

Learning a new language is always fun and exciting. It can get a little challenging for beginners at first, but with constant practice and hard work, this language is not very difficult. Marathi is considered as a flexible language. If you ever get stuck while talking or fail to find an appropriate word, you can always use English words.

Welcome

(This “welcome” is used when you invite someone to your house).

सुस्वागतम / तुमचं स्वागत असो

Suswagatam / Tumcha swagat aso

(Sus - wa - ga - tam) / (Tum - cha - swaa - gat - aso)

How are you?

(This is used for males of your age or someone who is younger.)

तू कसा आहेस?

 

Tu kasa aahes?

(Tu - ka - saa - aa - heys) 

How are you?

(This is used for females of your age or someone who is younger.)

तू कशी आहेस?

Tu kashi aahes? 

(Tu - ka - shi - aa - heys) 

How are you?

(This is used for someone who is older to you and when you want to give them respect.)

आपण कसे आहात?

Apan kase aahat?

(Apan - ka - say - aa - haat) 

I’m fine. 

 

मी ठीक आहे / मस्त / मी मजेत आहे

Me thik aahe / Mast / Me majet aahe.

Me - theek - aa - hey / Mast / Me - ma - jet - aa - hey

What is your name?

(Use this when you are talking to someone informally).

तुझं नाव काय आहे?

Tujha naav kai aahe?

Tu - jha - naav - kaay - aahe

What is your name?

(Use this when you are talking to someone formally).

आपले नाव काय आहे?

Aaple / Tumcha naav kai aahe?

Aap - ley / Tum - cha - naav - kaay - aahe

My name is ______.

 

माझं नाव ______ आहे

Majha naav ______ aahe

Maa - jha - naav - ______ - aa - hey

Do you speak Marathi?तुम्हाला मराठी बोलता येते का?

Tumhala Marathi bolta yeta ka?

Tumha - la - Marathi - bol - taa - ye - ta - ka
