পিতা একজন পুরুষ অভিভাবক হিসেবে যে-কোন ধরনের সন্তানের জনক হিসেবে সংজ্ঞায়িত হয়ে থাকেন। তিনি যে-কোন সন্তানের পুরুষ জন্মদাতা। মাতা পিতার বিপরীত লিঙ্গ। পিতার বিভিন্ন প্রতিশব্দ হলো - জনক, আব্বা, বাবা, জন্মদাতা ইত্যাদি। তিনি সন্তানের জন্মদানের লক্ষ্যে এক্স (স্ত্রীলিঙ্গ) অথবা ওয়াই (পুংলিঙ্গ) ক্রোমোজোম ধারণকারী বীর্য স্বীয় স্ত্রীর জননতন্ত্রে প্রবেশ করান।

A father is the male parent of a child. A biological father is the male genetic contributor to the creation of the infant, through sexual intercourse or sperm donation. A biological father may have legal obligations to a child not raised by him, such as an obligation of monetary support. An adoptive father is a man who has become the child's parent through the legal process of adoption. A putative father is a man whose biological relationship to a child is alleged but has not been established. A stepfather is a non-biological male parent married to a child's preexisting parent and may form a family unit but generally does not have the legal rights and responsibilities of a parent in relation to the child.
