A tsunami is a series of waves in a water body caused by the displacement of a large volume of water, generally in an ocean or a large lake. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other underwater explosions above or below water all have the potential to generate a tsunami. Unlike normal ocean waves, which are generated by wind, or tides, which are in turn generated by the gravitational pull of the Moon and the Sun, a tsunami is generated by the displacement of water from a large event.

കടലിലെയും മറ്റും ജലത്തിനു് വൻതോതിൽ സ്ഥാനചലനം സംഭവിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഉടലെടുക്കുന്ന ഭീമാകാരമായ തിരകളെയാണ് സുനാമി എന്നു വിളിയ്ക്കുന്നത്. ഭൂമികുലുക്കം, വൻതോതിലുള്ള സമുദ്രാന്തർ ചലനങ്ങൾ, അഗ്നിപർവ്വതസ്ഫോടനം, ഉൽക്കാപതനം, മറ്റു സമുദ്രാന്തരസ്ഫോടനങ്ങൾ തുടങ്ങിയവ ഒരു സുനാമി സൃഷ്ടിക്കാൻ കഴിവുള്ള കാരണങ്ങളാണ്. സുനാമികൾ തിരിച്ചറിയപ്പെടാത്തത്ര ചെറുതും, അങ്ങേയറ്റം നാശനഷ്ടങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടാക്കാവുന്നത്ര വലുതും ആകാം. ഗ്രീക്ക് ചരിത്രകാരനായ തുസിഡൈഡാണ് ആദ്യമായി സുനാമിയെ സമുദ്രാന്തർ ഭൂകമ്പങ്ങളുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെടുത്തിയത്. ഇരുപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടുവരെ സുനാമിയെപ്പറ്റി വളരെ ചെറിയതോതിൽ മാത്രമേ അറിവുണ്ടായിരുന്നുള്ളൂ.
