हिंदू पंचांगानुसार सूर्य पूर्वेस उगवल्यावर पश्चिमेस मावळून परत दुसऱ्या दिवशी उगवण्यापर्यंतच्या कालास वार असे म्हणतात. मुसलमान सूर्यास्तानंतर पुढचा वार सुरू झाला असे समजतात तर आंतरराष्ट्रीय पद्धतीनुसार मध्यरात्री बारानंतर नवीन वार सुरू होतो. तिन्ही पद्धतींमध्ये सूर्योदय ते सूर्यास्त या काळात एकच समान वार असतो. वारांनाच वासर असेही म्हटले जाते. एका आठवड्यात सात वार असतात. पंचांगाच्या पाच अंगांपैकी एक ‘वार’ आहे. असे असले तरी वार आणि आठवडा या संकल्पना आपण ग्रीकांकडून घेतल्या असे एक मत मांडले जाते. हिंदू पद्धतीत पंधरवड्यातील दिवसांना तिथींची नावे होती, पण आठवड्याच्या दिवसांना नव्हती असे निरीक्षण केल्याने हा विचार मांडला जात असावा. आर्यभट्ट या विद्वान ज्योतिर्विद व खगोलशास्त्रज्ञाने वारांच्या क्रमवारीनुसार त्यांची संस्कृत नावे प्रचलित केली, असे मानले जाते.
