Description
A clock or chronometer is a device that measures and displays time. The clock is one of the oldest human inventions, meeting the need to measure intervals of time shorter than the natural units such as the day, the lunar month, and the year. Devices operating on several physical processes have been used over the millennia.
घड्याळ हे काल मापनासाठी वापरले जाणारे उपकरण आहे. पुरातन काळी लोक सूर्याची आकाशामधील जागा पाहून वेळ ठरवत असत. त्यानंतर अगदी इ.स. पूर्व २५० पासून कालमापनाचे पुरावे आढळतात. भारतात घटिकापात्र अनेक शतकांपासून वापरात होते, पण त्यात त्रुटी होत्या. जसे ते पाण्यात ठेवावे लागत असे. पाण्यात ठेवल्यानंतर घटकाभराने ते भरून बुडले म्हणजे ‘एक घटिका झाली’ असे मोजले जात असे. घड्याळाचा शोध लावण्यासाठी गॅलीलिओने लावलेला लंबकाच्या आवर्तनांना ठराविकच वेळ लागतो हा शोध महत्त्वाचा ठरला. लंबकाच्या या गुणाचा उपयोग घड्याळाचे नियमन करण्यासाठी केला गेला. यामुळे अचूक वेळ दाखवणारी लंबकाची घड्याळे प्रचारात आली. घड्याळ्यामध्ये तीन काटे असतात. तास काटा, मिनिट काटा आणि सेकंद काटा. जे वेळ दर्शवण्यासाठी मदत करतात. काही घडयाळ्यांमध्ये दिवस आणि वार सुद्धा दर्शवले जाते. २४ तासाचा एक दिवस, ६० मिनिटाचा एक तास, ६० सेकंदाचा एक मिनिट असते. घड्याळ वेगवेगळ्या प्रकारची असतात. जगभरात घड्याळ उत्पादन करणाऱ्या अनेक कंपन्या कार्यरत आहे.
