A habit is a routine of behavior that is repeated regularly and tends to occur subconsciously.

అలవాటు (habit) అనగా ఏదైనా ఒక పనిని మళ్ళీ, మళ్ళీ అదే తడవుగా చేస్తూ ఉండే అదుపు తప్పిన ప్రవర్తన. వ్యక్తి ప్రమేయము ఉండకపోవచ్చు. అలవాటు అనగానే మంచి, చెడు రెండూ ఉంటాయి. మంచి అలవాట్లు పరవాలేదు గాని, చెడు అలవాట్లే ఆలోచించదగ్గవి. కొన్ని చెడు అలవాటులు తన చుట్టూ ఉన్నవారికి ఏ హాని చేయవు, కొన్ని అలవాట్లు వ్యక్తికి, ఇతరులకు చెడు చేస్తాయి. కొన్ని ఇతరులకు మాత్రమే కీడు చేస్తాయి. అలవాటనేది పూర్తిగా మానసికమైనదే. పరిసర వాతావరణము, వ్యక్తులు, జంతువులు, తను చేస్తున్న పని, కుటుంబ ఆర్థిక - సామాజిక స్థితిగతులు, సహవాసాలు అలవాట్లను ఎంతగానో ప్రభావితము చేస్తాయి. చెడు అలవాట్లకు లోనైన వ్యక్తుల కుటుంబాలు చిన్నా భిన్నమైన ఉదాహరణములెన్నోకలవు. సమాజములో ఆ వ్యక్తికి సరియైన గౌరవముండదు.
