विवरण

A gear is a rotating circular machine part having cut teeth or, in the case of a cogwheel or gearwheel, inserted teeth, which mesh with another (compatible) toothed part to transmit rotational power. While doing so, they can change the torque and rotational speed being transmitted and also change the rotational axis of the power being transmitted. The teeth on the two meshing gears all have the same shape.

गियर घूर्णी गति करने वाले मशीनों का एक अवयव है जिस पर 'दांते' बने होते है जिससे यह दूसरे गियरों से जुड़ता है। इनकी सहायता से एक धुरी (शाफ्ट) से दूसरी धूरी में बलाघूर्ण का संचार किया जाता है। इनकी सहायता से चाल, बलाघूर्ण या घूर्णन की दिशा बदली जा सकती है। गियर के उपयोग से बलाघूर्ण को बदला जा सकता है और यांत्रिक लाभ प्राप्त किया जा सकता है । आपस में जुड़ने वाले दो गियरों के दाँत समान आकार के होने चाहिए। जब दो या दो से अधिक गियर एक-दूसरे से जुड़े होते हैं तो इस संरचना को 'गियर शृंखला' कहते हैं। कोई गियर एक रैखिक गति करने वाले अवयव से जुड़ा हो हो तो इस संरचना की सहायता से घूर्णी गति को रैखिक गति में बदला जा सकता है।
