The liver is a major metabolic organ only found in vertebrate animals, which performs many essential biological functions such as detoxification of the organism, and the synthesis of proteins and biochemicals necessary for digestion and growth. In humans, it is located in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen, below the diaphragm and mostly shielded by the lower right rib cage. Its other metabolic roles include carbohydrate metabolism, the production of hormones, conversion and storage of nutrients such as glucose and glycogen, and the decomposition of red blood cells.

यकृत शरीर का एक अंग है, जो केवल कशेरुकी प्राणियों में पाया जाता है। इसका कार्य विभिन्न चयापचयों को detoxify करना, प्रोटीन को संश्लेषित करना, और पाचन के लिए आवश्यक जैव रासायनिक बनाना है। मनुष्यों में, यह पेट के दाहिने-ऊपरी हिस्से में डायाफ्राम के नीचे स्थित होता है, और मानव शरीर की शरीर की सबसे बड़ी ग्रंथि है, जो पित्त (Bile) का निर्माण करती है। पित्त, यकृती वाहिनी उपतंत्र तथा पित्तवाहिनी द्वारा ग्रहणी (Duodenum), तथा पित्ताशय में चला जाता है। पाचन क्षेत्र में अवशोषित आंत्ररस के उपापचय (metabolism) का यह मुख्य स्थान है। इसके निचले भाग में नाशपाती के आकार की थैली होती है जिसे पित्ताशय कहते है। यकृत द्वारा स्त्रावित पित्त रस पित्ताशय में ही संचित होता है। चयापचय में इसकी अन्य भूमिकाओं में ग्लाइकोजन भंडारण का विनियमन, लाल रक्त कोशिकाओं का अपघटन और हार्मोन का उत्पादन शामिल है।
