সাধারণ অর্থে সম্মতি শব্দটি কোন একজনের প্রস্তাব বা মতের সাথে একমত পোষণ করাকে বোঝানো হয়। তবে বিভিন্ন বিষয় ও প্রেক্ষাপভেদে সম্মতি শব্দের অর্থ ভিন্ন অর্থ হতে পারে। আইন, চিকিৎসা এবং যৌন সম্পর্ক- ইত্যাদি বিষয়ভেদে সম্মতি শব্দের ব্যবহার ভিন্ন। সম্মতির বিভন্ন প্রকারভেদের মাঝে রয়েছে- পরোক্ষ সম্মতি, প্রত্যক্ষ সম্মতি, জ্ঞাত সম্মতি এবং সাধারণ সম্মতি। আইনত, মানসিক পরিপক্কতা ও সুস্থতা সম্মতি প্রদানের অন্যতম শর্ত। দেশ ও রাষ্ট্রভেদে সম্মতি প্রদানের আইনগত বয়স ভিন্ন হয়ে থাকে।
