Forestry is the science and craft of creating, managing, planting, using, conserving and repairing forests and woodlands for associated resources for human and environmental benefits. Forestry is practiced in plantations and natural stands. The science of forestry has elements that belong to the biological, physical, social, political and managerial sciences. Forest management plays an essential role in the creation and modification of habitats and affects ecosystem services provisioning.

বনবিজ্ঞান বা অরণ্যবিজ্ঞান হল মানুষ ও প্রাকৃতিক পরিবেশের কল্যাণের জন্য বন, বনভূমি ও তৎসংশ্লিষ্ট সম্পদের সৃষ্টি, ব্যবস্থাপনা, ব্যবহার, সংরক্ষণ এবং মেরামতের বিজ্ঞান ও শ্রমশিল্প। আবাদি জমি অথবা প্রাকৃতিক স্ট্যান্ডে বনবিজ্ঞানের চর্চা করা হয়। বনবিদ্যার প্রধান লক্ষ্য হল এমন পদ্ধতির প্রণয়ন ও বাস্তবায়ন করা যা পরিবেশগত যোগান ও পরিষেবা প্রদানের উদ্দেশ্যে বনের সুব্যবস্থাপনা করবে। নির্বিঘ্ন অথবা ক্ষতির সম্মুখীন যেকোনো সম্পদ ব্যবস্থাপনা করতে গিয়ে একে সামাজিকভাবে গ্রহণযোগ্য করে তোলার মতো পদ্ধতির প্রণয়নই বনবিজ্ঞানের সবচাইতে বড় চ্যালেঞ্জ। যিনি বনবিজ্ঞান অনুশীলনের সাথে যুক্ত থাকেন তাকে বনবিজ্ঞানী বা ফরেস্টার বলা হয়।
