পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের ভাষায় শক্তি বলতে কোনো ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর কাজ করার সামর্থ্যকে বুঝায়। প্রধানত শ‌ক্তি হ‌চ্ছে পদা‌র্থের এমন একটি বৈ‌শিষ্ট্য যার সৃ‌ষ্টি বা ধ্বংস নেই, এক রূপ থে‌কে অন্য রূপ নি‌তে পা‌রে এবং এক বস্তু থে‌কে অন্য বস্তুতে যেতে পারে। বিখ্যাত E=mc² অনুযা‌য়ী শ‌ক্তি পদা‌র্থে নি‌হিত থাক‌তে পা‌রে । যেমন ফিশন বি‌ক্রিয়া । কাজ বা কার্য হচ্ছে বল ও বলের দিকে সরণের গুণফল। কৃতকাজের পরিমাণ দিয়েই শক্তি পরিমাপ করা হয়। অর্থাৎ বস্তুর শক্তি হচ্ছে ঐ বস্তু মোট যতখানি কাজ করতে পারে। সুতরাং কাজের একক ও শক্তির একক অভিন্ন - জুল। ১ জুল = ১ নিউটনХ ১ মিটার। শক্তি একটি অদিক রাশি।
