Banditry is a type of organized crime committed by outlaws typically involving the threat or use of violence. A person who engages in banditry is known as a bandit and primarily commits crimes such as extortion, robbery, and murder, either as an individual or in groups. Banditry is a vague concept of criminality and in modern usage can be synonymous for gangsterism, brigandage, marauding, terrorism, piracy and thievery.

डकैती हिंसा या हिंसा की धमकी से ग़ैर-क़ानूनी ढंग से किसी अन्य व्यक्ति का धन, माल, जान, पशुधन या अन्य वस्तु छीन लेने को कहते हैं। डकैती करने वाले व्यक्तियों को डाकू या दस्यु कहा जाता है। डाकू अक्सर गिरोहों का भाग होते हैं और ऐसे क्षेत्रों में अड्डे बनाते हैं जहाँ पुलिस और अन्य क़ानून के रखवालों का पहुँचना कठिन राहज़नी एक विशेष प्रकार की डकैती होती है जिसमें यात्रा कर रहे लोगों पर आक्रमण कर के उनसे चोरी की जाती है या स्वयं उन पर बलात्कार या हत्या जैसा अपराध किया जाता है।
