A carpet is a textile floor covering typically consisting of an upper layer of pile attached to a backing. The pile was traditionally made from wool, but since the 20th century synthetic fibers such as polypropylene, nylon, or polyester have often been used, as these fibers are less expensive than wool. The pile usually consists of twisted tufts that are typically heat-treated to maintain their structure. The term carpet is often used in a similar context to the term rug, but rugs are typically considered to be smaller than a room and not attached to the floor.

कालीन अथवा गलीचा उस भारी बिछावन को कहते हैं जिसके ऊपरी पृष्ठ पर आधारणत: ऊन के छोटे-छोटे किंतु बहुत घने तंतु खड़े रहते हैं। इन तंतुओं को लगाने के लिए उनकी बुनाई की जाती है, या बाने में ऊनी सूत का फंदा डाल दिया जाता है, या आधारवाले कपड़े पर ऊनी सूत की सिलाई कर दी जाती है, या रासायनिक लेप द्वारा तंतु चिपका दिए जाते हैं। ऊन के बदले रेशम का भी प्रयोग कभी-कभी होता है परंतु ऐसे कालीन बहुत मँहगे पड़ते हैं और टिकाऊ भी कम होते हैं। कपास के सूत के भी कालीन बनते हैं, किंतु उनका उतना आदर नहीं होता। कालीन की पीठ के लिए सूत और पटसन (जूट) का उपयोग होता है। ऊन के तंतु में लचक का अमूल्य गुण होने से यह तंतु कालीनों के मुखपृष्ठ के लिए विशेष उपयोगी होता है। फलस्वरूप जूता पहनकर भी कालीन पर चलते रहने पर वह बहुत समय तक नए के समान बना रहता है। यानी जल्दी मैला (गन्दा) नहीं होता।
