The viscosity of a fluid is a measure of its resistance to deformation at a given rate. For liquids, it corresponds to the informal concept of "thickness": for example, syrup has a higher viscosity than water. Viscosity is defined scientifically as a force multiplied by a time divided by an area. Thus its SI units are newton-seconds per square meter, or pascal-seconds.

श्यानता (अंग्रेजी:Viscosity) किसी तरल का वह गुण है जिसके कारण वह किसी बाहरी प्रतिबल (स्ट्रेस) या अपरूपक प्रतिबल के कारण अपने को विकृत (deform) करने का विरोध करता है। सामान्य शब्दों में, यह उस तरल के गाढे़पन या उसके बहने का प्रतिरोध करने की क्षमता का परिचायक है। उदाहरण के लिये, पानी पतला होता है एवं उसकी श्यानता वनस्पति तेल की अपेक्षा कम होती है जो कि गाढा़ होता है। किसी द्रव या गैस को दो क्रमागत परतों के बीच उनकी आपेक्षिक गति का विरोध करने वाले घर्षण-बल को श्यान बल कहते हैं
