A tunnel is an underground or undersea passageway. It is dug through surrounding soil, earth or rock, or laid under water, and is enclosed except for the portals, commonly at each end. A pipeline is not a tunnel, though some recent tunnels have used immersed tube construction techniques rather than traditional tunnel boring methods.

ಸುರಂಗವು ಮಾನವನಿರ್ಮಿತ ಭೂಗರ್ಭ ಮಾರ್ಗ (ಟನಲ್). ರಸ್ತೆ, ರೈಲು ಮಾರ್ಗ, ಕಾಲುವೆ ಮುಂತಾದವುಗಳಿಗೆ ಅಡ್ಡಲಾಗಿ ದುರ್ಗಮ ಬೆಟ್ಟ, ಗುಡ್ಡ ಇತ್ಯಾದಿ ಎದುರಾದಾಗ ಇವನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಪಾರ್ಶ್ವ ತಲಪುವ ಬದಲು ಅಲ್ಲಿಯ ಅಡಚಣೆಯ ಅಡ್ಡ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸುರಂಗ ಕೊರೆದು ಮುಂದುವರಿಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ರಸ್ತೆ ಮತ್ತು ರೈಲುಮಾರ್ಗ ಅಡ್ಡ ಹಾಯುವಲ್ಲಿ ಮೇಲು ಅಥವಾ ಕೆಳ ಸುರಂಗ ರಚಿಸುವುದು ವಾಡಿಕೆ. ದಟ್ಟ ವಾಹನಸಂಚಾರವಿರುವ ಹಾದಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾದಚಾರಿಗಳಿಗೆಂದೇ ಭೂಮ್ಯಂತರ್ಗತ (ಸಬ್‍ವೇ) ಸುರಂಗಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸುವುದುಂಟು.
