Eucalyptus is a genus of more than 700 species of flowering plants in the family Myrtaceae. Most species of Eucalyptus are trees, often mallees, and a few are shrubs. Along with several other genera in the tribe Eucalypteae, including Corymbia and Angophora, they are commonly known as eucalypts or "gum trees". Plants in the genus Eucalyptus have bark that is either smooth, fibrous, hard, or stringy, the leaves have oil glands, and the sepals and petals are fused to form a "cap" or operculum over the stamens. The fruit is a woody capsule commonly referred to as a "gumnut".

ഔഷധ ഗുണമുള്ള "മിർട്ടേസീ” കുടുംബത്തിൽ പെട്ട “യൂക്കാലിപ്റ്റുസ് ഗ്ലോബുലസ്” എന്ന ശാസ്ത്രീയ നാമമുള്ള ഒരു മൃദുമരമാണ് യൂക്കാലിപ്റ്റസ്. യൂകാലിപ്റ്റസ് എന്ന ജനുസ്സിൽ 700-ൽ ഏറെ മരങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ട്. ഓസ്ട്രേലിയയിലാണ്‌ യൂകാലിപ്റ്റസ് മരങ്ങളുടെ മിക്കവാറും സ്പീഷീസുകൾ കാണപ്പെടുന്നത്.യൂക്കാലിപ്റ്റസ് എന്നത് പ്രത്യേക ഇനം മരങ്ങളും കുറ്റിച്ചെടികളും അടങ്ങിയ സസ്യജാലത്തിലെ ഒരു ജനുസ്സാണ്‌. ഓസ്ട്രേലിയയിലെ വൃക്ഷജാലത്തിലെ പ്രധാന പങ്കും ഈ ഇനത്തിൽ പെട്ടതാണ്‌. ഏകദേശം എഴുന്നൂറോളം വ്യത്യസ്ത ഇനങ്ങൾ ചേർന്നതാണ്‌ ഈ ജനുസ്സ്. മിക്കവയും ഓസ്ട്രേലിയയിൽ നിന്നുള്ളവയാണ്‌. കേരളത്തിൽ മൂന്നാർ, ദേവികുളം തുടങ്ങിയ സ്ഥലങ്ങളിൽ വൻ‌തോതിൽ കൃഷിചെയ്യുന്നു. കൂടാതെ തെക്കേ ഇന്ത്യയിൽ നീലഗിരി, കർണാടകം തുടങ്ങിയ സ്ഥലങ്ങളിലും തഴച്ചു വളരുന്നുണ്ട്.
