ജന്തുക്കൾ എന്നാൽ ബഹുകോശ നിർമ്മിതമായ ജൈവഘടകങ്ങളെ എല്ലാം ചേർത്ത് പറയുന്ന പേരാണ്. ജീവശാസ്ത്രത്തിൽ ആനിമാലിയ (മെറ്റസോയ) സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തി ജന്തുക്കളെ വർഗ്ഗീകരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ആനിമാലിയ എന്ന കിങ്ഡത്തിൽ മനുഷ്യരും ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു. എന്നാൽ സംഭാഷണത്തിൽ ജന്തു എന്ന പദം പലപ്പോഴും മനുഷ്യേതര ജന്തുക്കളെ മാത്രമേ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നുള്ളൂ. മൃഗങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ശാസ്ത്രീയ പഠനം സുവോളജി (ജന്തുശാസ്ത്രം) എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ജന്തുക്കളുടെ നീളം 8.5 മൈക്രോമീറ്റർ മുതൽ 33.6 മീറ്റർ വരെയാണ്.
