Climate is the long-term weather pattern in a region, typically averaged over 30 years. More rigorously, it is the mean and variability of meteorological variables over a time spanning from months to millions of years. Some of the meteorological variables that are commonly measured are temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind, and precipitation. In a broader sense, climate is the state of the components of the climate system, including the atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, lithosphere and biosphere and the interactions between them. The climate of a location is affected by its latitude, longitude, terrain, altitude, land use and nearby water bodies and their currents.

ਜਲਵਾਯੂ ਦੋ ਸ਼ਬਦਾ ਦੇ ਸੁਮੇਲ ਜਲ+ਵਾਯੂ ਤੋਂ ਹੋਂਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਲ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਵਾਯੂਮੰਡਲ ਵਿਚਲੀ ਨਮੀ,ਵਰਖਣ ਅਤੇ ਜਲਵਾਸ਼ਪ ਆਦਿ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਯੂ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਵਾਯੂਮੰਡਲੀ ਪੌਣਾ ਦੀ ਦਿਸ਼ਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਗਤੀ ਆਦਿ। ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਲਵਾਯੂ ਵਾਯੂਮੰਡਲ ਦੀਆਂ ਹਾਲਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਰਸਾਉਦਾਂ ਹੈ। ਆਮ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਜਲਵਾਯੂ ਲੰਬੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀਆ ਮੌਸਮੀ ਹਾਲਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਸਥਾਨ ਤੇ 30-35 ਸਾਲਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਮੌਸਮੀ ਹਾਲਤਾਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਇਸ ਧਾਰਣਾ ਨੂੰ ਠੀਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਜ ਔਸਤ ਮੌਸਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਗੋਂ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਅਸਾਧਾਰਣ ਵਾਯੂਮੰਡਲੀ ਹਾਲਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਦਹਾਰਣ ਵਜੋਂ ਮਿਸੀਸਿਪੀ ਨਦੀ ਘਾਟੀ ਅਤੇ ਕੈਲੇਫੌਰਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਤੱਟਾਂ ਤੇ ਲੱਗਭਗ ਇਕੋ ਜਿਹੀ ਸਲਾਨਾ ਔਸਤ ਵਰਖਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਕੈਲੇਫੋਰਨੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਤੱਟਾਂ ਤੇ ਵਰਖਾ ਸਰਦ ਰੁੱਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮਿਸੀਸਿਪੀ ਨਦੀ ਘਾਟੀ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਰਾ ਸਾਲ ਵਰਖਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
