Buddhism, also known as Buddha Dharma and Dharmavinaya, is an Indian religion and philosophical tradition based on teachings attributed to religious teacher the Buddha. It is the world's fourth-largest religion, with over 520 million followers, known as Buddhists, who comprise seven percent of the global population. Buddhism originated in the eastern Gangetic plain as a śramaṇa–movement in the 5th century BCE, and gradually spread throughout much of Asia via the Silk Road. It has subsequently played a major role in Asian culture and spirituality, eventually spreading to the West beginning in the 20th century.

भगवता बुद्धेन बौद्धदर्शनं प्रवर्तितम्। भारतीयशास्त्राधारेषु बौद्धदर्शनस्य प्रभावः विशेषतः दृश्यते। बौद्धमूलग्रन्थाः भारते लुप्तप्रायाः सन्ति। विदेशीयपण्डितानां संशोधनस्य फलतः इदानीं केचन् ग्रन्थाः दृश्यन्ते। भगवतः बुद्धस्य अनन्तरं बौद्धेषु बह्व्य: शाखाः उत्पन्नाः। ताश्च चतस्रः प्राधान्येन - वैभाषिकाः, सौत्रान्तिका:, योगाचाराः, माध्यमिकाः चेति। वैभाषिकाणां हीनयानसम्प्रदायः। अन्येषां त्रयाणां महायानसम्प्रदायः। बौध्दानां 'शून्यवादः' प्रसिध्दः।'यत्र किमपि नास्ति तत्' इति अत्र शून्यपदस्य अर्थः न। बौध्ददर्शने शून्यपदस्य दार्शनिकः विशालः अर्थः अस्ति। बौध्दमतस्य धार्मिकाः बहवः अंशाः 'त्रिपिटके निरूपिताः सन्ति।
