Curium is a synthetic chemical element; it has symbol Cm and atomic number 96. This transuranic actinide element was named after eminent scientists Marie and Pierre Curie, both known for their research on radioactivity. Curium was first intentionally made by the team of Glenn T. Seaborg, Ralph A. James, and Albert Ghiorso in 1944, using the cyclotron at Berkeley. They bombarded the newly discovered element plutonium with alpha particles. This was then sent to the Metallurgical Laboratory at University of Chicago where a tiny sample of curium was eventually separated and identified. The discovery was kept secret until after the end of World War II. The news was released to the public in November 1947. Most curium is produced by bombarding uranium or plutonium with neutrons in nuclear reactors – one tonne of spent nuclear fuel contains ~20 grams of curium.

கியூரியம் (Curium) என்பது Cm என்ற மூலக்கூற்று வாய்ப்பாட்டுடன், அணு எடை 96 எனக் கொண்டுள்ள யுரேனியப் பின் தனிமங்கள் வரிசையில் உள்ள ஒரு கதிரியக்கத் தனிமமாகும். ரேடியம் என்னும் கதிர்வீச்சுத் தனிமத்தைக் கண்டுபிடித்துப் புகழ் பெற்ற அறிவியலாளரான மேரி கியூரியின் நினைவாகக் ஆக்டினைடு வரிசைச் சேர்மமான இதற்கு கியூரியம் என்று பெயரிடப்பட்டது. மேரி மற்றும் பியரி கியூரி இருவரும் கதிரியக்க ஆய்வில் புகழ்பெற்ற அறிஞர்களாக விளங்கினர். முதன் முதலில் 1944 ஆம் ஆண்டில் கிளென் தியோடர் சீபோர்க் குழுவினர் பெர்க்லியில் உள்ள கலிபோர்னியா பல்கலைக் கழகத்தில் திட்டமிட்டு கியூரியத்தை உருவாக்கினர். இந்தக் கண்டுபிடிப்பு இரகசியமாக வைக்கப்பட்டு பின்னர் 1945 நவம்பரில் பொதுமக்களுக்கு அறிவிக்கப்பட்டது. அணுக்கரு உலைகளில் யுரேனியம் அல்லது புளூட்டோனியத்தை நியூட்ரான்களைக் கொண்டு பிளந்துதான் பெருவாரியான கியூரியம் தயாரிக்கப்படுகிறது. செலவிடப்பட்ட ஒரு டன் அணுக்கரு எரிபொருளில் 20 கிராம் கியூரியம் காணப்படுவதாக அறியப்படுகிறது.
